We get asked this all the time by buyers from the US and Canada, and the honest truth is that how Belizeans feel about you isn’t really about where you’re from. It’s about how you show up.

Belizeans are genuinely some of the warmest people you will ever meet. And because the country is English-speaking, there’s no language barrier standing between you and your neighbors from day one.

That combination makes settling in here feel different than almost anywhere else you could go.

Belize is a small country, and its economy is still growing. So when a wave of foreign buyers comes in with US and Canadian dollars, it doesn’t take much to drive prices up fast, especially in the most popular coastal spots like Ambergris Caye and Placencia, where home values have jumped double digits in a single year.

For a lot of locals, that means the beach town they grew up in is suddenly priced for outsiders, and the next generation can’t afford to buy there. That frustration is real, and it’s fair, and you should know it’s going on before you arrive.

Here’s what actually decides which side you’ll land on. The expats who get embraced treat Belize like their home, not their vacation. They shop at the local markets instead of importing everything. They learn their neighbors’ names. They remember they’re a guest in someone else’s country.
