A lot of people think moving to Belize requires piles of paperwork, years of waiting, or becoming a full citizen. For a lot of my clients, it doesn’t. There’s a program built specifically to make the move straightforward, and once you understand how it works, Belize starts to feel a lot closer than you expected.
It’s called the Qualified Retired Person’s Program (QRP) and is one of the most efficient paths to foreign residency in the Americas. I’ve had clients apply, get approved, and have their residency card in hand within months. Others spent years researching other countries and were surprised at how straightforward this one is by comparison.
The QRP is designed for people who want tax breaks, residency, and real incentives for making Belize their home, without the complexity that usually comes with an international move. Here’s what you need to know.
First, who qualifies? You need to be at least 40 years old and a citizen of the USA or a Commonwealth country, including Canada, along with members of the EU, Asian-Pacific countries, and all South American countries. You also need to show $2,000 in monthly income from a source outside Belize. That income can come from a pension, Social Security, investments, an annuity, or even personal savings.
And the program lets you include your dependents, which means your spouse and children can come with you under your application.
Second, what do you actually get? This is where the QRP really stands apart. Members are exempt from Belize taxes on foreign-sourced income, capital gains, and inheritance. You can import your household goods, a vehicle, a boat, and even a light aircraft duty-free within your first year. You get a residency card that lets you live in Belize without a visa.
And under recent updates, QRP members may even be approved to carry on a qualifying business in Belize, subject to specific requirements set by the Belize Tourism Board, which I’m happy to walk you through if that’s part of your plan.
If you’ve been thinking about Belize and you want clear guidance on whether the QRP makes sense for your situation, reach out to me directly.
