Is Belize safe? Of all the questions prospective buyers bring to me, this one arrives most often, and it deserves neither a sugarcoated reply nor an alarming one. It deserves an honest answer. If you’re considering buying property here or relocating your family, a headline alone won’t give you the full picture. In Belize, where you are matters far more than the country itself.

Belize is where I work and where I help families from the US and Canada make this move every day. What follows isn’t the travel-blog version. It’s the version I’d give my own family.

1. What the travel advisory actually says. The U.S. State Department currently rates Belize at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution, the same advisory level it assigns to France, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The only area carrying a stricter warning is the south side of Belize City, which sits at Level 3 because of gang-related crime.

That’s a specific residential district most visitors and expats never set foot in, and it’s nowhere near the islands, the beach towns, or the places most buyers are considering. When an alarming headline about Belize appears, it almost always traces back to a few blocks of one city rather than the country you’d actually be moving to.

“Belize is as safe as the choices you make.”

2. Where people choose to settle. Many of the families I work with settle in places like Ambergris Caye,Placencia, inland Cayo, and Corozal. These are small, walkable, community-driven towns where neighbors know one another. In these areas, the most common issue you’ll encounter isn’t violence. It’s petty theft: an unlocked golf cart, a phone left on a beach towel.

3. Everyday common sense goes a long way. The same sensible habits you’d practice anywhere serve you well here. Lock your door, don’t flash cash, and avoid wandering unfamiliar areas alone late at night.

So the honest answer is this: Belize is as safe as the choices you make. If you’d like a straight, honest conversation about which communities fit your life, let’s talk. Call or text me at 727-565-1507, email me at macarenarose@kw.com, or visit belizerealestateservices.com.

I’ll always give you the real picture.
