I’ve seen this firsthand. I worked with a remote marketing consultant who moved to San Pedro, thinking the infrastructure would match the lifestyle. Her rental advertised strong Wi-Fi, but speeds dropped during peak hours, and a short power outage took her offline in the middle of a meeting. Power is available, but you still need backup. Electricity reaches over 99% of Belize, so access isn’t the problem. Outages can still happen, especially during storms or maintenance periods. If your work depends on being online, you can’t rely on the grid alone.

Most remote professionals set up surge protection and a UPS battery backup. This keeps your modem and laptop running long enough to finish meetings or avoid losing work. Belize uses 110V, so U.S. devices plug in without converters, which makes the transition easier.

Water systems vary from one property to another. Water is one of the most overlooked details, but it can affect your daily routine more than you expect. In town centers, municipal water is common. In more rural or island areas, homes may rely on rainwater catchment systems, private wells, or village water. This doesn’t mean there’s a problem, but it does mean you need to confirm the setup.

Check the water source, storage, and how it’s treated before signing anything. Many homeowners install filtration systems or use bottled water for drinking to stay consistent.

Your location shapes your entire experience. Where you live in Belize will determine how easy your work life feels. Developed areas offer better infrastructure, including fiber internet and more stable utilities. Remote areas offer privacy and natural surroundings, but they often require extra investment in generators, solar systems, or additional water storage.

There isn’t a right or wrong choice, but there is a right fit based on how you work. If your job depends on reliability, then your location needs to support that.
